The Operator

The Operator review in narrative is the core and essence of the entire game. The concept is straightforward: you play as Evan Tanner, and it’s your inaugural day at the Federal Department of Intelligence (FDI). As an Operator, your role is to collaborate with field agents to aid in crime-solving. This typically involves utilizing specialized FDI tools, including technologies like facial identification, vocal analysis, and a searchable database of citizens. However, this seemingly uncomplicated premise becomes more complex and engaging once you delve deeper into the game; you’re thrust into high-stakes cases from the outset.

The Operator Playthrough

The gameplay in The Operator on steamĀ  may seem mundane at first glance, but don’t let that deter you. Initially, it appears to involve merely navigating a computer interface and responding to calls from supervisors, agents, and occasional acquaintances. However, there is a degree of agency in your responses, as you typically have two to three options to choose from in each conversation. Having only completed one playthrough, I’m uncertain whether your choices significantly impact the experience. Nevertheless, the game’s latter half introduces more diversity in gameplay, allowing for a more dynamic experience. Certain events can end in failure, which increases the tension and adds a layer of excitement.

The Operator’s sound design is minimalist, given its desktop-based setting, which limits opportunities for immersive ambiance. Nevertheless, the sounds that are present are authentic and impactful: telephones ringing, mouse clicks, digital scanning tones, and so on. The sole exception is the eerie sound design in the blurred cutscenes that punctuate gameplay. This sound is challenging to describe audibly, but it effectively conveys an unsettling, enigmatic, and suspicious atmosphere.

How long is The Operator?

The voice acting in The Operator is exceptional. What’s more impressive is that some voice actors play multiple roles, making the distinctiveness and characterization all the more remarkable. Each character boasts unique inflections and authentic responses to in-game events. Overall, this aspect of the game truly shone during my playthrough.
